Stud & Breeding

Breen Equestrian’s breeding programme, spearheaded by our Stud Manager, Greg Le Gear, is based out of Pook Bourne Stud, which lies just east of The All England Jumping Course, Hickstead.

Between Shane and Greg – who’s also a qualified AI technician – Breen Equestrian’s breeding operation has successfully been running since 2014. With Shane & Greg’s invaluable knowledge of mares, stallions and young stock and, with a commitment to excellence and attention to detail, we have produced some very exciting sport horses which have been bred in the UK and now compete worldwide.

Greg is instrumental to our success. He is always on hand to lend his expertise to other breeders from all spheres and disciplines. Whether discussing bloodlines, stallion choices, mare management or foal & youngstock care, Greg is incredibly personable and knowledgeable. Each season, Greg welcomes local schools, pony clubs and riding clubs to Pook Bourne Stud for informative demonstrations to foster and encourage their interest in sport horse breeding.

We aim to avidly support other British breeders, stud owners, and British breeding events. We host stallion and mare grading events and foal and young stock futurities for other breeding societies to give local breeders in West Sussex greater access and opportunities to promote and display their young stock.

We stand some of the best-bred stallions in the UK, including top-flight championship horse Golden Hawk (Vigo d’Arsouilles x Chin Chin). He has sired a 5* winner and many of the most exciting horses bred at Hickstead. Can Ya Makan (Canturo x Fier De Lui Z), Hickstead Derby & International Grand Prix winner, is the sire to many international winners. Cuick Star Kervec (Quick Star x Diament de Semilly), currently excelling at the 5* level, has sired some of the prosperous young stock in our stables. Colmar (Colestus x Luidam’s Rubin) is yet another 1.60 showjumping stallion whose progeny looks to follow in his footsteps.

We also have a stud in Ireland in partnership with Shane’s cousin, John Griffin, who bred Cos I Can. Cos I Can was a massive talent for both Shane and then went on to jump at the top of the sport with Reed Kessler. Some of our stallions (Golden Hawk, Can Ya Makan, Lucky Luck and Z7 Dubai Castlefield) are available at stud in Ireland, making our stallions even more accessible for EU breeders. We also have a breeding operation in the Ukraine, where some of our top young horses have come out.

We are confident we have a stallion for every type of mare, no matter the discipline, with our young stock and progeny speaking for themselves and excelling.
