The Breen Team headed up to Birmingham this week to compete in the famous Horse of the Year Show. 

Georgia set the tone for the show, winning the Welcome Stakes with Z7 Caretina – we can’t say enough how impressed we are with this little mare bouncing back from major surgery and already claiming multiple wins this year. In the Grandstand Stakes, Shane and Gait L claimed 5th place with Georgia and Z7 Ascot hot on their heels to finish in 6th. In the NAEC Stoneleigh Stakes, Shane piloted Lady Star van Doperheide to a stunning 7th place whilst Evita and Georgia jumped to 10th.  

On Saturday, 8-year-old Vistogrand stepped up to the challenge in the Accumulator to come home with a 2nd place – a very impressive result to add to this horse’s record! 

On Sunday, Vistogrand, out to do one better than his result the day before, cleared and impressive 1.75 in the 5 Fence Challenge to take the win! And in good company as well, as Shane and Vistogrand shared the win with the legend John Whitaker. In the Speed Horse of the Year, Georgia and Evita jumped to 10th place with Shane and Gait L following closely behind to finish in 11th. The show culminated in the 3* Grand Prix – the Leading Showjumper of the Year. Shane and Lady Star posted a beautiful round to come home with an 11th placing whilst Georgia and fan favourite Z7 Ascot jumped to 5th place, proving again just how consistent they are as a pair!

Horse of the Year Show

This week Shane and Ellen stayed in France take on  the 2* show at Fontainebleau. 

Friday was, yet again, full of clear rounds. Cato Boy cruised around the 1* 1.30  while Vistogrand impressed around the 2* 1.35. KBS Major Player brought the clear round tally up to three, jumping a masterclass in the 2* 1.35, setting him up for the weekend.  

On Saturday, the horses all schooled round their respective classes.. Vistogrand made the 2* 1.35 look easy, whilst Gait L flew around the 2* 1.45. 7-year-old Cato Boy stepped up to the challenge in the 1* 1.30, showcasing his scope and technique.  

Sunday was a busy day with all horses jumping. Shane rode  Cato Boy around the 1* 1.25, taking his time to teach Cato Boy some more ring craft. KBS Major Player showed off round the 2* Grand Prix, really proving  why he deserves to be at  the top of the sport. Vistogrand had a play around the 2* 1.40 for a clear round, but Nit to be outshone, Gait L  took 8th in the same class.  

A huge shout out to Darcy Breen, who won her BS Affiliated class, the 128 Springboard, at Felbridge on Little Ceasar! A first of what we are sure will be many wins for this pairing.

KBS Major Player

Born in Limerick, Shane got his first pony at the age of five and hunted throughout his childhood. He represented Ireland at Pony International level becoming European Silver Medallist and winning the opportunity to spend some time in Nelson Pessoa’s yard in Europe, and then progressed through Junior and Young Riders teams to the Senior Irish National Team. He represent Ireland on many occasions up to European and World Championships. Over the years he won many Grand Prix including 2010 Lummen, 2018 Monaco and 2019 Dublin. 

Clear rounds from Shane have contributed to many Irish Nations Cup victories, including those at Dublin in 2006 & 2011 and Hickstead in 2012, and also to Ireland's Bronze medal at the Furisiyya Nations Cup final in Barcelona 2012.  Shane cites his double clear on World Cruise in the Aga Khan Trophy at Dublin in 2006 as one of his most memorable experiences.

Shane has over twenty years’ experience of buying and selling horses. He has a brilliant eye for the right horse – be it a show jumper with Olympic potential, an amateur show jumper or eventer, or a hunter.

 
With extensive contacts in many disciplines, and all over Europe and Ireland you can be sure that even if Shane doesn’t have the horse you need in his yard, he knows where it is. Shane’s rides for 2018 include Golden Hawk, Ipswich van de Wolfsakker, Laith, CFS Vendi Cruz and Can Ya Makan.


In 2007 Shane married Chloe, daughter of Hickstead founder Douglas Bunn, and they are based at Hickstead in Sussex with their four children, Lorna, Darcy, Douggie and Wolftone.

4. Z7 Dubai Castlefield 

Georgia joined Breen Equestrian at the beginning of April 2015 as a young rider. Over the years she had some consistent good results winning classes at CSI5*W Dubai, CSI2* Valencia, CSI2* Chepstow, CSI3* Bonhaiden, CSI3* Zwolle, CSI3* St.Lo, CSI4* Bolesworth also representing Team Great Britain at  CSIO5* Abu Dhabi, CSIO3* Lisbon and CSIO3* Uggerhalne (Denmark). In 2018 together with Z7 Cash Up Georgia  was selected to represent Great Britain at FEI CH-EU-Y-S – European Jumping Championships in Fontainebleau (France) where they got a team Silver Medal. In October 2019 Georgia had a fantastic show at Horse of the Year Show CSI3* Birmingham finishing 4th in the Grand Prix and becoming leading rider of the show.
