Vistogrand is a very kind horse, a real favourite on the yard. He travels well with other
horses, he is relaxed at competitions and remains focused on his job. As an 8 year old he was 2nd in a Grand Prix in Dubai and at HOYS 2021 was a winner in one of the 4* International classes.

The past couple of months has seen Shane and the Breen Team go from strength to strength. August was jam-packed full of shows in the UK, Ireland and Europe, kicking off at Bolesworth where the young horses added miles onto their clock and Z7 Regal Don took 4th in the 2* GP Qualifier. 

Heading over to Ireland, it was the super mare Haya who never was out of the top 10 in the 5* classes at Dublin, taking 5th in the 5* Minvera Stakes, 4th in the 5* Speed Derby and 8th in the 5* Speed Championship. We have always believed this mare was going to be special and she's proven that every time she steps in the ring!

At LGCT, Valkenswaard - Vistogrand jumped phenomenal to help the Rome Gladiators come 3rd, but the highlight of the month was our first ever hybrid auction taking place which was a huge success. This has been an incredible addition to Breen Equestrian and we are excited to be hosting more in the future.

Rolling into September, where Ellen and Shane followed the LGCT around the world. In Rome, Italy, Z7 Ipswich proved to be quick and careful to win the opening 5* class, and fllowed up this perfomance in New York by jumping clear for the Rome Gladiators. In the big apple, it was Haya's time to take the victory - speeding to top spot in the 5* 1.45 Speed Class.  

Earlier this month, Shane took a team up to Birmingham for the Horse of the Year Show and they did not disappoint. Vistogrand jumped to 3rd in the 3* Accumulator as well as joint 2nd in the 6-bar to showcase his scope but it was Cuick Star Kervec who was star of the show, winning the iconic Leading Showjumper of the Year 3* Grand Prix - a fantastic way to start indoor season!

Summer Update

It’s been a jam-packed month for the Breen Team.  

After the back of his Derby win, Shane and Ellen hit the road for three weeks following the European circuit with a team of horses. They did not disappoint with multiple clear rounds and top placings being collected at LGCT Monaco and the 3* show in Ommen, Netherlands. The star of the show really was the Old Lodge’s Haya who stayed super consistent over the two weeks, picking up 4th and 4th in the 5* 1.45 classes in Monaco and taking runner-up position in the 3* 1.45-speed class in Ommen.  

The final week of July saw the team back at the Royal International Show at Hickstead where Haya kept up her phenomenal form. Entered in the Queen’s Cup, Haya took the crown by being quick and clear in the historic class. This has been the third time Shane has been able to put his name on the plaque and just adds to the very long tally of wins at Hickstead.  

It has been three years since the last Royal International Horse Show and we’ve missed the tremendous sport that we get to see in England with this 5* show. All our horses stepped up to the plate in the big classes, with Z7 Regal Don flying to 4th in the 5* Royal International Vase and taking 6th in the 5* Speed Classic. Cuick Star Kervec stunned the crowds with his incredible scope and talent to land on the podium with 3rd in the 5* 1.50 Royal International Salve. However, it was the return of the Nations Cup which had everyone’s attention with 8 star-studded teams entered to battle it out in the International Arena. Shane and the up-and-coming stallion Vistogrand were selected for Team Ireland and the beautiful black horse made his 5* Nations Cup debut in style. Making light work of the difficult course, ‘Visto’ and Shane jumped an incredible clear in the first round and a small green mistake in the second round led them to finish on a score of 4 faults. Although it wasn’t Ireland’s day, it was an incredible day of sport and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how Vistogrand performed. Congratulations to France for the win! 

We were also very excited to launch our first ever auction collection over the week of the Royal. We have offered 12 exceptional horses for sale, with a horse in the auction for everyone! These fantastic horses jumped multiple clear rounds at the Royal, but also picked up some top placings. Z7  Porshce jumped incredibly in the 7-year-old classes all week to come 4th in the Final, whilst BE Blue picked up her Championship qualification for the Foxhunter Final at the September show by flying to 2nd place. Cinderella Z also took 3rd in the 7-year-old National classes whilst Rivell PS repeated the result in the 5-year-old National. We couldn’t be prouder of how these horses performed, with these placings solidifying our knowledge that they would be welcome additions to any string.

July Round Up

This week we kicked off two weeks at Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Centre, starting off with the 3* Show and Young Horse qualifiers.  

Z7 Regal Don was exceptional at this show. Not touching a pole all weekend, this special stallion stunned the crowds and put on exhibitions each time he stepped into the ring. Not only did he jump out his skin, but he was never out of the out top three. On Friday, he sped to 2nd place in the 3* 1.40 to warm up to start his impeccable week. Then on the Saturday, he was entered in his first-ever 6-bar class, clearing an enormous 1.95m to finish in 2nd place. ‘Skittles’ also made his 3* Ranking Class debut on Sunday, jumping double clear to land again yet on the podium in bronze position. We are so excited for this 9-year-old who’s really impressing us in the bigger classes, and even more excited for his progeny who are also showing his scope, carefulness and rideability.  

The rest of the team did not disappoint. The young horses were on flying form, with BE Aquila picking up some good placings in the 6-year-olds whilst Z7 Porsche and Z7 Dubai Castlefield made the 7-year-old classes look easy. Lady Star van Doperheide picked up a 3rd placing in the 3* Grand Prix Qualifier with Shane whilst Z7 Ascot and Georgia followed closely behind them to take 5th in the same class. Vistogrand also pulled out all the stops over the weekend, jumping clear in the 3* GP Qualifier on the first day.  

A special mention has to go out to Breen Equestrian alumni, Jack Ryan and Jule van de Tinnepot, who won the 3* 1.30 on the Friday and Sunday. A pairing we missed seeing in the ring and are looking better than ever!

Z7 Dubai Castlefield is an exciting young horse, approved by the Breeders Elite Studbook.

2020 saw Dubai make his debut in the international arena - and what a debut it was, with 16 top ten placings and multiple wins. Not only is he a winner on the international stage after winning the CSI YH1* 7-year-old Final at Abu Dhabi, but Z7 Porsche comes with a ticket to the Horse of the Year show after his incredible performance for 2nd place in the Foxhunter Second Rounds at Hickstead. His resume includes multiple top 5 placings in both the national and international 7-year-old classes, along with winning the 7-year-old final at Northcote’s Young Horse Show. Z7 Porsche not only has an impressive record, but has a top-class pedigree to boot. Sired by the incredible Emerald van’t Ruytershof, Z7 Porsche shares bloodlines with top showjumpers including Kasper Van Het Hellehof (1.70), Imerald van’t Voorhof (1.65), Igor (1.65), and Jaguar van de Berghoeve (1.65) to name a few.  Z7 Porsche not only impresses with his record and pedigree, but his looks are next to none and his willingness for his job is hard to beat.

Z7 Porsche

Born in Limerick, Shane got his first pony at the age of five and hunted throughout his childhood. He represented Ireland at Pony International level becoming European Silver Medallist and winning the opportunity to spend some time in Nelson Pessoa’s yard in Europe, and then progressed through Junior and Young Riders teams to the Senior Irish National Team. He represent Ireland on many occasions up to European and World Championships. Over the years he won many Grand Prix including 2010 Lummen, 2018 Monaco and 2019 Dublin. 

Clear rounds from Shane have contributed to many Irish Nations Cup victories, including those at Dublin in 2006 & 2011 and Hickstead in 2012, and also to Ireland's Bronze medal at the Furisiyya Nations Cup final in Barcelona 2012.  Shane cites his double clear on World Cruise in the Aga Khan Trophy at Dublin in 2006 as one of his most memorable experiences.

Shane has over twenty years’ experience of buying and selling horses. He has a brilliant eye for the right horse – be it a show jumper with Olympic potential, an amateur show jumper or eventer, or a hunter.

 
With extensive contacts in many disciplines, and all over Europe and Ireland you can be sure that even if Shane doesn’t have the horse you need in his yard, he knows where it is. Shane’s rides for 2018 include Golden Hawk, Ipswich van de Wolfsakker, Laith, CFS Vendi Cruz and Can Ya Makan.


In 2007 Shane married Chloe, daughter of Hickstead founder Douglas Bunn, and they are based at Hickstead in Sussex with their four children, Lorna, Darcy, Douggie and Wolftone.

A prize-giving FaceTime call and some divine intervention: the inside story of Shane Breen’s Hickste

It’s been a fantastic two weeks on the road for the Breen Team. Ellen with Z7 Ipswich and Haya headed to the south of France for the LGCT show in Cannes.  

In the idyllic setting, Haya flew to 2nd in the 5* Prix de Nice Martin in good company. Z7 Ipswich was on the team for the GCL Rome Gladiators and delivered a crucial clear round for the team who now lie in 8th place overall - roll on LGCT Stockholm! 

Back on British soil, Breen were out in full force at our favourite county show, South of England. The older horses did not disappoint, with Z7 Regal Don flying to 2nd place in the Area Trial on the Friday and then picked up 4th in the Grand Prix on the Saturday. On Sunday, Vistogrand pulled out all the stops in the 1.55 International Stairway class to finish on top and bring home the win! With these top 5 placings every day in the big classes, it solidified our love for this county show even further! 

In the outer rings, the rest of the team were putting in solid rounds and jumping numerous clears. On the back of some fantastic results at Felbridge - where Katie and Evita took the win in the Grand Prix – it's always great to get the horses out competing on grass before Hickstead. Z7 Dubai Castlefield looked like he was in a class of his own schooling around the 1.30 with John, whilst Katie and Evita were consistently clear in the 1.30 & 1.35 classes. Philip expertly piloted BE Blue, Rivell PS and BE Top-Sekret in the Foxhunters classes, giving all these young horses a positive education.
