This week, Georgia was representing Team Z7 and the Breen Team at the Abu Dhabi 2* Ladies Show.  

Georgia dominated in the 2* 1.40 Opening Class, taking the top two podium positions on Z7 Caretina and super stallion Can Ya Makan. With just 0.18 seconds between her rounds, Georgia went head-to-head with herself in the blisteringly fast jump-off to prove to be best in the field. It was especially great to see 16-year-old Can Ya Makan feeling fresh and ready in the prize giving – we're so glad this special stallion only gets better with age! 

In the 2* Grand Prix, Z7 Caretina was on the podium again, this time in silver position. Georgia expertly piloted her around the 1.40m high track, showcasing the mares speed and ability over the large fences. With a win and a 2nd placing under their belt so far, 2022 is proving to be this pairings year already!  

Abu Dhabi Ladies Show

We are feeling very lucky to be back in the Middle East for the winter season with the full team of Z7 horses. 2022 kicked off with a 4* show at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club.  

The young horses started off the week on a high, with all of them stepping up a level with ease. BE Aquila jumped a stunning clear in the 6-year-olds under David Simpson whilst Z7 Porsche and Shane spun around the 7-year-olds for a podium finish of 3rd. The older horses also impressed on the first day of jumping, with them all warming up over a 4* 1.40 track. Shane piloted Vistogrand to 14th place whilst David and the talented 8-year-old Elmira Mail claimed 11th. Georgia brought home 8th on the fan favourite Z7 Caretina to round off the day.  

Saturday was full of more clear rounds and results. BE Aquila was careful and fast in the 6-year-olds to come 7th and in the 4* 1.40, Shane and Vistogrand jumped to 11th. The highlight of the day was Trevor and Toyger, who skilfully cleared the 4* 1.40 course for 7th place.  

The Breen brothers were on top form on Sunday. Shane sped to 5th on Lady Star van Doperheide in the 4* 1.45 Ranking Class but it was Trevor who brought home the top result, riding Germaine W to silver position with an impressive round that left the crowd in awe. In the Grand Prix, Trevor rode Highland President in his 1.60 debut and the gelding did not disappoint. A stunning clear meant they came home with a 13th placing. Z7 Ipswich started his year as he means to go on, jumping double clear in a blisteringly fast jump off to slot into 5th place. What a way to get set up for the year!

Vistogrand is a very kind horse, a real favourite on the yard. He travels well with other
horses, he is relaxed at competitions and remains focused on his job. As an 8 year old he was 2nd in a Grand Prix in Dubai and at HOYS 2021 was a winner in one of the 4* International classes. Vistogrand is a beautiful stallion with so much presence, super
conformation and lots of talent - a fantastic stallion to complement a variety of mares.

Vistogrand

Born in Limerick, Shane got his first pony at the age of five and hunted throughout his childhood. He represented Ireland at Pony International level becoming European Silver Medallist and winning the opportunity to spend some time in Nelson Pessoa’s yard in Europe, and then progressed through Junior and Young Riders teams to the Senior Irish National Team. He represent Ireland on many occasions up to European and World Championships. Over the years he won many Grand Prix including 2010 Lummen, 2018 Monaco and 2019 Dublin. 

Clear rounds from Shane have contributed to many Irish Nations Cup victories, including those at Dublin in 2006 & 2011 and Hickstead in 2012, and also to Ireland's Bronze medal at the Furisiyya Nations Cup final in Barcelona 2012.  Shane cites his double clear on World Cruise in the Aga Khan Trophy at Dublin in 2006 as one of his most memorable experiences.

Shane has over twenty years’ experience of buying and selling horses. He has a brilliant eye for the right horse – be it a show jumper with Olympic potential, an amateur show jumper or eventer, or a hunter.

 
With extensive contacts in many disciplines, and all over Europe and Ireland you can be sure that even if Shane doesn’t have the horse you need in his yard, he knows where it is. Shane’s rides for 2018 include Golden Hawk, Ipswich van de Wolfsakker, Laith, CFS Vendi Cruz and Can Ya Makan.


In 2007 Shane married Chloe, daughter of Hickstead founder Douglas Bunn, and they are based at Hickstead in Sussex with their four children, Lorna, Darcy, Douggie and Wolftone.

 

1. Shane Breen 

We were so excited to go to the new Excel location for the London International Horse Show this year, and it did not disappoint. Ellen and Shane headed up with yard favourite Z7 Ipswich, the Old Lodge Stud’s wonderful Haya and the super scopey Cuick Star Kervec. It was always going to be an interesting week, especially with Cuick and Haya both making their 5* debuts! 

On Thursday, Cuick Star Kervec began his week on a high, jumping an easy clear round in the 5* 1.45 Christmas Pudding Speed Stakes. Z7 Ipswich also brought home a great result on the first day, finishing 12th in the 5* 1.50 Santa Stakes.  

Haya took on the challenge on Friday in the 5* 1.40 with a spectacular round for an unfortunate rail, nevertheless a stunning performance and exciting 5* debut for this 9-year-old mare. Cuick also had an exciting day, jumping his first ever 1.55. He cleared the fences with ease, giving an exhibition to the crowds and leaving everyone gasping – with up-and-coming horses like these, the future does seem very bright! 

Haya then made her 1.50 debut on Saturday in the 5* Global Herbs Snowflake Stakes, and not only did she jump a top round, but also finished in 7th place! Not to be outdone, Cuick jumped a stunning round in the 5* 1.55 Longines Christmas Cracker to showcase his scope and ability.  

We couldn’t be prouder of Haya, this mare got better and better every time she stepped into the ring. In the 5* 1.50 Martin Collins Christmas Tree Stakes, she proved herself to be quick and careful over the massive fences to bring home 4th,  finishing her show on a high. We can’t see what this wonderful horse does in 2022! 

Although both Cuick and Haya came to London to gain experience, they surely brought their A-game and seemed to be having some friendly competition! After Haya’s 4th place, Cuick just had to do one better in his last class of the show - 5* 1.45 Mistletoe Speed Stakes. Storming around the course and giving the fences plenty of room, Cuick sped to his podium finish of 3rd place. What a horse for the future! 

We also wanted to thank BUCAS for letting us takeover their social media account on Monday, we had such a great time giving a behind the scenes look to the new Excel location for the London International Horse show and are thrilled with how well it went. A huge thanks to London for putting on a festive show for the holidays and with it being done to the highest standard.  

Next stop for the Breen Team is Dubai to meet the team of Z7 horses for an exciting eight weeks in the sun. For now - merry Christmas everyone!

This 2012 son of Quick Star is a beautifully stamped type with an exceptional temperament and fantastically scopey, careful and correct jump. He has a particularly careful back end over fences and this trait stamps strongly, appearing in his progeny.

In 2020, he collected many results and placings at 1.40m level, competing on the Middle Eastern Tour in Abu Dhabi and also on the Vilamoura Champions Tour in Portugal.

Several of his youngsters reside here at our stud - from yearlings up to 4-year-olds, all look superb. We also have a particularly exciting gelding called "BE Warnham" out of Ardina who herself competed at 1.50m level internationally.



7. Cuick Star Kervec

This week was the Breen Team’s fourth and final week out in Portugal, and the horses kept impressing us with their final rounds under the sun.  

The six-year-olds have really learnt their ring craft on this tour. It was both Keyton and Koh-I-Noor's first stay away show abroad and they have really come into their own as competitive horses. This final week highlighted their talent, with Keyton and Georgia picking up a podium finish with 2nd in the age class whilst Jack aboard the young stallion Koh-I-Noor cinched 7th.  

On Wednesday, the teams for the Nations Cup warmed up in their training session. With both Jack and Shane selected to represent Team Ireland. Not only was Jack making his senior Nations Cup debut this week, but it was also a debut for his homebred Irish 10-year-old BBS McGregor. Lady Star van Doperheide was stepping up to her first team event as well, under the expert riding of Shane. The rest of Michael Blake's team was made of Shane’s brother Trevor and Anthony Condon.  

However, there was still jumping to come before. On the Thursday, Jack expertly piloted Cuick Star Kervec around the 3* 1.45 Jump Off Class to slot into 9th place. Yet another fantastic result for this up-and-coming horse. Shane jumped Gait L for a lovely round in the 2* 1.40 to pick up 6th place, whilst Georgia schooled the Old Lodge Stud’s Haya around for a clear round. The highlight of the day was Georgia winning the 2* 1.40 on her own homebred Donavaya – well done Georgia! 

On Friday, Lady Star van Doperheide jumped clear in the 3* 1.40 and looked ready for Sunday. Georgia spun Donavaya around the 2* 1.40 again for another top result, taking home 5th place.  Saturday was a quieter day. Shane aboard the Kennedy brother’s KBS Major Player, jumped around the 3* 1.40 speed class for 3rd place. Georgia then piloted the wonderful Haya around the 2* Grand Prix for an exciting 5th place – what a mare! 

Sunday was the much-awaited Nations Cup. With 17 nations represented in Portugal, it was a nail biter from start to finish. The four strong Irish team stepped up to the plate and impressed the crowds. Anthony Condon was first in the ring, and jumped some solid rounds, aiding the Irish team with a clear in the second round. Jack and McGregor’s debut couldn’t have gone better with an unlucky fence in the first round and a clear in the second, this pairing keeps on showing us what they are made of. Lady Star and Shane made the third leg of the team, and the mare jumped her heart out to show what a horse she is for the future. Team anchor was Trevor Breen who jumped one of only five double clears in the class, to secure the win for team Ireland. What a day and what a result – a huge thanks and congratulations to all involved! 

With the horses headed back home, we couldn’t of wished for a better tour and ended on a high. Thank you Vilamoura – we can’t wait to be back next year!

3. Jack Ryan 

This week Shane and Ellen stayed in France take on  the 2* show at Fontainebleau. 

Friday was, yet again, full of clear rounds. Cato Boy cruised around the 1* 1.30  while Vistogrand impressed around the 2* 1.35. KBS Major Player brought the clear round tally up to three, jumping a masterclass in the 2* 1.35, setting him up for the weekend.  

On Saturday, the horses all schooled round their respective classes.. Vistogrand made the 2* 1.35 look easy, whilst Gait L flew around the 2* 1.45. 7-year-old Cato Boy stepped up to the challenge in the 1* 1.30, showcasing his scope and technique.  

Sunday was a busy day with all horses jumping. Shane rode  Cato Boy around the 1* 1.25, taking his time to teach Cato Boy some more ring craft. KBS Major Player showed off round the 2* Grand Prix, really proving  why he deserves to be at  the top of the sport. Vistogrand had a play around the 2* 1.40 for a clear round, but Nit to be outshone, Gait L  took 8th in the same class.  

A huge shout out to Darcy Breen, who won her BS Affiliated class, the 128 Springboard, at Felbridge on Little Ceasar! A first of what we are sure will be many wins for this pairing.

KBS Major Player

We were back at the stunning Circo Massimo this week in Rome for the second week of LGCT & GCL.  

The Kennedy brother’s KBS Major Player made his first 5* appearance in this historic arena and really stepped up to the stage, showcasing his terrific jump, scope and presence. His 5* debut was topped with a top 15 placing in the 5* 1.50 on the Friday to land in the money. We can’t wait to see this 9-year-old gelding at his next outing! 

Z7 Ipswich was once again a star of the show. Consistently fast and clear, Team Z7’s legendary gelding took 3rd place in the GCL Second Round on Saturday to land New York Empire on the podium with a 3rd place finish. It was fantastic to share the podium with fellow Irishman, Denis Lynch, and with New York Empire now lying-in 8th in the Global Champions League, it’s still anyone’s game! 

What an experience it has been to be at the Circo Massimo and with the arena having witnessed horses for the first time in 2,000 years, it’s been an absolute honour to be part of this historic event and we well and truly hope we made our mark. We can’t wait to be back next year!

Z7 Ipswich

Another very busy week for the Breen Team with Shane and Ellen heading to LGCT Rome and the rest of the team flying the flag at Hickstead.  

Before he headed to Italy, Shane jumped some of the younger horses at Hickstead. The super young stallion that is Lucky Luck made his Hickstead debut, jumping to 12th in the meter class – a great start to this special 4-year-olds jumping career. 7-year-old Cato Boy stepped up to the challenge in the 7-year-olds non-qualifier to speed to 4th place just off the podium, showcasing his talent and scope.  

On Thursday, Georgia dominated the opening 1.40 class in the main ring at Hickstead. She sped to win the hotly contested class on catch ride Essenar High Hopes, owned by Margaurite Ryan. She was on the podium again in 3rd place with the Old Lodge’s Evita XX and also finished 6th with Team Z7’s stallion Can Ya Makan. Georgia then rode Koh-I-Noor in the 6-year-old qualifier to take home 8th place – a day full of top 10 finishes! What a girl, what a pilot! 

Back in Rome, the jumping started on the Friday. Lady Star van Doperheide stepped up to the plate in the 5* 1.45 and was fast and clear to finish 10th - what a result for only her second ever 5* and showing us what a mare she will be for the future. Z7 Ipswich’s time to shine was on Saturday. Bringing his A-game, he jumped out of his skin in the 5* Grand Prix to finish 11th and then impressed again in the 5* 1.55 Individual Classification to take 10th place. Lady Star showed us what she was made of again in the 5* 1.50 on Sunday to also take 9th place. We couldn’t be more excited for this team of horses – roll on week 2 of Rome! 

On Friday at Hickstead, it was Deja-vu for Georgia and Evita when they took 3rd in the 1.40 Open in the main ring again. To kick off the weekend, John rode Lucky Luck in the British Novice to add a 10th place to this stallion's record whilst piloting the Old Lodge’s Haya to 7th and qualify for the final the next day. Georgia and Essenar High Hopes showed us again what they were made of in All English Grand Prix, jumping a stunning clear in the first round. An unfortunate pole in the jump-off keeping them off the podium, but they still managed to finish on a high, taking home 8th place.  

Another successful week for us here at Breen Equestrian and what a way to end the inaugural All English Showjumping Tour. A huge thanks to the whole Hickstead team – we can’t wait to do it all again next year! 

A first week in Rome and a second week at Hickstead

This week Shane & Ellen headed off to Sentower.for the 4* show with Z7 Ipswich, Vistogrand and Lady Star Van Dorperheide and Sjelle. 

Thursday had some great results with a clear from Lady Star Van Dorperheide in the CSI4* 1.40m, followed by a class round in the CSI4* 1.45m from Z7 Ipswich who finished 12th and qualified for the Grand Prix. This was not to be outdone by Sjelle who in the 4* 1.30 produced an excellent clear, finishing in 10th 

On Friday, Shane piloted Vistogrand to a double clear in the 8YO class, showcasing this young horse’s talent. Z7 Ipswich, aka Mr Consistent, came out once again and posted another brilliant double clear in the 4*1.50m to land 13th in a huge class.  

Lady Star Van Dorperheide, had a great day on Saturday with a super clear inside the time in the 4* 1.45m to end up in 13th. Although little, this mare finds it all very easy and still hasn’t been phased by anything we ask of her – definitely a star of the future.   

Sunday saw even more great performances. Shane and Lady Star Van Dorperheide were in the 4* 1.45m for jumping another fantastic clear and just picking up a time fault. Vistogrand jumped a stunning round in the 8YO final to finish in 10th - he is definitely one to watch. Last but not least, Z7 Ipswich and Shane competed in 4* Grand Prix and displayed both speed and technique earning them 8th place.  

All the horses were true professionals and performed to their best each day, which is all we can ever ask for. A big thank you to the team at Sentower for a great show, we look forward to returning soon!

Colmar is an international Grade A stallion, competing at 1.60m level.

He is approved by the Breeders Elite Studbook and by Colestus, who jumped to 1.60m level and who was in turn by the great Cornet Oblenksky. His dam line is Quidams Rubin/Quidam de Revel.

Colmar was a prolific winner through the age classes and stepped up to 1.40m and 1.50m level as an 8 year old. His obvious ability saw him step up to 1.60m Grand Prix level as a 9-year-old, with a win in the 2* Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi in 2020. He has also been a regular on the Global Champions Tour with some fantastic performances around the world.

Colmar is an elegant horse with a beautiful head and a kind eye. He has text book technique with neat presentation of his front legs over fences. He also combines a big canter with a lightness that makes him beautiful to watch. His damline shows a heavy thoroughbred influence and this is evident in his own progeny. They are lovely types all of whom have inherited his qualities and are already making their mark both internationally and at young horse championship level.

Can Ya Makan is an International Grand Prix horse by Canturo (international 1.60m) and on his dam's side is Fier du Lui Z (international 1.60m).

Makan is a versatile, well bred horse, with excellent technique over a fence. He is excellently conformed with strong hindquarters and great feet. This week saw the Breen Team out in full force, with a team headed to Chard Equestrian in England for the 2* whilst Jack, Ryan and Ellen stayed in Italy with Jack in the 2* at Busto Arsizio. 
Friday was a great day for the Breen Team. Shane jumped two clear rounds, one with Vistogrand in the 2* 1.35 and the other with Killbarron Rue in the 2* 1.40. Georgia secured 4th aboard The Old Lodge Studs Quintella and was clear with her own Don Avaya in the 2* 1.35. Katie was clear in the 6-year-olds with BE Constanta and clear in the money in the 1* 1.25 with Latte Macchiato, which also saw Emmie and Sapphire come 4th. Meanwhile in Italy, Jack came 4th with Sjelle in the 2* 1.30 and was again in the top 10 with KBS Major Player coming 8th in the 2* 1.40, where BBS McGregor also posted a clear round. It was great to see homebred BE Noble win the 6-year-olds in Italy. The highlight of the day was back at Chard with Gait L winning the 2* 1.40 with Shane, adding another win to this horse’s resume!
At Chard on Saturday, Z7 Porsche was on the podium, coming 3rd in the 6-year-olds with Shane and Georgia and Don Avaya where clear again in the 2* 1.35. Jack recorded the fastest time in the 2* 1.45 class in Busto Ariszio with the Kennedy brother’s KBS Major Player, but an unfortunate fence costed them the win. 
Sunday was Grand Prix day for Jack, who piloted BBS McGregor to 3rd place. Well done to Jack for flying the flag out in Italy. 
At Chard, Emmie had a successful day in the 1* 1.25 as she and Sapphire finished 6th. Shane and Vistogrand came 3rd in the 2* 1.35 Medium Tour Grand Prix but the star of the day was Georgia who topped the podium twice – winning the Medium Tour Grand Prix with Team Z7’s Can Ya Makan and then with Quintella in the 2* 1.40. Congratulations to Georgia!
Monday morning was bright and early, as the first class at Chard was the Grand Prix. Both Georgia and Shane jumped foot perfect clear rounds in the first round, aboard Team Z7’s Can Ya Makan and Gait L, respectively. With 20 through to the jump off and in good company, it was a nail biting class to watch. Georgia and Makan had an unfortunate fence, but as second fastest 4-faulter, they still finished in a respectable 12th place. Shane and Gait L were clear again and very fast to finish on the podium in third, with only 0.65 seconds between him and the winner. Congratulations to Eoin Gallagher on the win!

Gorla Minore 12-16th May
This week, Shane, Jack, Georgia, Ellen, Ryan and Mossy returned to the Equieffe Arena for the 4* show. 
Thursday was a clear round day for Shane, coming 12th in the 7-year-olds with Nikki Rutter Giappone’s Cato Boy and 15th in the 4* 1.35 with Cuick Star Kervec. He also piloted Z7 Ipswich to a clear round in the 4* 1.45 with Jack coming 7th in the same class with the Kennedy brother’s KBS Major Player. 
Cato Boy was clear and 7th in the 7-year-olds again, and Cuick Star Kervec jumped another good clear round in the 4* 1.40 to finish 14th. Shane then came 14th with Z7 Regal Don in the 4* 1.45, with Jack and Georgia also having strong rounds on BBS McGregor and Z7 Ascot, respectively. Georgia had great success in the U25 class aboard Lady Star van Doperheide finishing in 10th. 
A clear sheet this week for Shane and Cato Boy in the 7-year-olds and just finishing off the podium with a 4th place in the final. A brilliant show for this fantastic young horse who has a very bright future ahead of him. Jack also had a super day, coming 4th in the 4* 1.50 riding his own BBS McGregor and winning the U25 class with the Old Lodge Stud’s Sjelle. 
Sunday was Georgia’s time to shine, piloting the Old Lodge Stud’s Evita to 12th in the 4* 1.40 and finishing 2nd in the U25 Grand Prix on Lady Star van Doperheide.

Gorla Minore 4*

The Breen Team had a fantastic last week out in Italy, again enjoying the facilities at Gorla Minore.  

The 7-year-olds started off the show strong with Elmira Mail and Cato Boy jumping clears with Jack and Shane, respectively. Jack was the star of the day with the Kennedy brother’s KBS Major Player finishing 2nd in the 3* 1.45 Grand Prix Qualifier.   

Friday saw similar success for the 7-year-olds, with both jumping clear again. Cato Boy and Shane finished 4th and Elmira Mail and Jack finished 2nd. In the 1.40, Shane and Cuick Star Kervec and Georgia with Lady Star van Doperheide jumped double clear whilst The Old Lodge’s Sjelle had an unfortunate fence in the jump off.  The highlight of Friday was Z7 Ipswich and Shane finishing 5th in the 1.45.  

Shane had a great day on Saturday jumping clear in the 3* 1.50 with Z7 Regal Don and then 12th with Cuick Star Kervecin the 1.40 

Sunday was Grand Prix day for the Breen Team but it wasn’t our day with both Georgia and Shane having unlucky fences on Z7 Ascot and Z7 Ipswich. Congratulations to William Funnell on the win! 

A great final week in Gorla Minore

This week, Shane and Ellen headed to St Tropez in France to compete in the third leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour.  

Straight out the gate, Z7 Ipswich finished 8th in the opening 5* 1.55 class. This round also helped the New York Empires to finish in 3rd after the first round, with an unfortunate 4 faults by team mate Spencer Smith aboard Ayade Hero Z. Compelling Z jumped very well in the 5* 1.50, showing his scope and loving the arena.  

Z7 Ipswich rounded off the weekend with an unfortunate fence in the 5* 1.60, the New York Empire team after this leg sit in a very strong 5th place in the current standings of the Global Champions League. Roll on Valkenswaard! 

GCL ST Tropez

This week The Breen Team were well and truly spread across Europe. Shane headed to the 5* GCT/GCL of Valkenswaard, Jack and Georgia were in Peelbergen for the 3* show whilst Emmie and Katie were at the Second Round Show at Pyecombe.  

Shane had a top weekend in the Netherlands. On Friday, Z7 Ipswich jumped a great clear in the first round of the 5* 1.45 whilst Compelling Z had an unfortunate fence in the first round of the 5* 1.55 GCL. On Saturday, Killabarron Rue came 9th in the 2* 1.45 Big Tour but the highlight was Compelling Z finishing in 7th in the 5* 1.45 on the Sunday.  

Jack and Georgia also had a great weekend in Peelbergen.  Georgia was clear in the 3* 1.40 on Lady Star van Doperheide, with Jack repeating the same great result twice on BBS McGregor and Vistogrand on the Thursday. On Friday, Lady Star van Doperheide made her 1.50 debut with Georgia posting a competitive clear. Z7 Caretina picked up a 9th place in the 3* 1.45 with Georgia whilst Jack and BBS McGregor and Jack added another clear round to their resume in the 3* 1.40 on Saturday. On Sunday, Georgia and the ever-consistent Lady Star van Doperheide came 7th in the 3* 1.40 finshing the show off with a clean sheet. Jack jumped a great round in the 3* Grand Prix aboard his own BBS McGregor but a single time fault meant they had to sit out on the jump off.  

Back in England, Katie and Emmie headed to the Second Round Show at Pyecombe. Both Katie and Emmie jumped clear in the Foxhunter, Katie aboard the stunning 6-year-old stallion Z7 Porshce and Emmie piloting her own Sapphire. Katie posted a clear round on BE Constanta in the Newcomers to round off their Thursday. On Friday, BE Constanta and Katie qualified for the National Championships by jumping triple clear in the Big Star Qualifier and finishing in =1st. Emmie and Sapphire jumped a great clear in the Foxhunter Second Round. On Saturday, Katie jumped clear in the British Novice aboard Geniale Star Kervec to finish a fantastic show. 

A huge thanks to the whole Breen Team both in the ring and behind the scenes that make going to these shows possible and thank you to all three showgrounds for putting on great shows.  

Valkenswaard, Peelbergen and Pyecombe 

This week was a very busy one with the whole Breen Team in action at our favourite county show, South of England.  

Friday saw Katie, Emmie, Jack and Georgia in the grass rings with some fabulous rounds. Georgia was in the Area Trial, with an unfortunate fence with Evita, but finished in 4th with Z7 Ascot, whilst Jack and Vistogrand snapped up 10th in the Grade C Qualifier.  

On Saturday, Shane joined the team and got back in the ring. He had a stunning clear on Z7 Regal Don in the 1.40 and finished in 5th on 7-year-old Cato Boy in the 1.30 with the young horse showing his promise. Georgia had another successful day, winning the 1.20 Open with The Old Lodge’s Haya and jumping clear in the 1.30 with her own Donavaya. Katie jumped some faultless rounds in the Newcomers with up-and-coming stallion BE Aquila and finishing on the podium in with BE Constanta.  

Sunday was the last day and the Breen Team brought their A-Game. Georgia was clear again in the 1.20 open with Haya, finishing in the top 10 whilst Shane jumped another clear with Cato Boy in the 1.30. Shane then won the Accumulator in the main ring with the prolific stallion Can Ya Makan and the day finished with Jack and KBS Major Player finishing in 2nd in the 1.55 International Stairway.  

A huge thank you to our team behind the scenes working through the heat for such a successful show and to the South of England show ground for putting on another great event. We can’t wait to come back next year! 

South of England County Show

This week The Breen Team were competing at home – the legendary Hickstead. A much-loved venue for the Team, who were sad to miss out on it last June. Although disappointed the Derby show wasn’t running, it was great to be back competing on the showground and the Breen team did not disappoint with their results. 

The week got off to a great start with Shane, Georgia and Jack all in the 1.30s. Shane on Can Ya Makan and Georgia on Donavaya both had successful schooling rounds giving their horses the best start to the week. Jack had an unlucky pole in the 1.30m with Sjelle, but otherwise put in a great effort for the first class of the week. Georgia had a brilliant round in the 1.20 on Haya, who put in a stellar performance to go clear and inside the time, alongside Shane who also went clear with Gait L.  

Thursday was another great and busy day for the team where they entered the Main Ring for the first time this year. Shane was the first of the day and despite an unlucky pole in the first phase, Shane and Gait L displayed a great partnership all while being unphased by the prospect of going first in such a prestigious arena. Georgia had a steady but clear round in the 1.40m on Z7 Ascot, reminding us just why he’s a fan favourite. Jack and his own Essenar High Hopes displayed great technique and had an excellent clear round, sending them through to the jump off, where an unlucky pole left them just out of placings. Georgia then had two brilliant rounds on Donavaya and Haya in the 1.30 and finished 3rd with Haya. Not far behind was Shane who followed up with two effortless clears in the 1.30 on Z7 Regal Don and Cuick Star Kervec, placing 2nd and 4th respectively.    

Friday had many more successes for Georgia and Jack in the 1.40m. Riding Z7 Caretina, Georgia had a superb ride with just one pole. Jack and BBS Mcgregor jumped round the 1.40 with ease going steady but clear nonetheless. The highlight of the day was Essenar High Hopes jumping a class round to finished 10th, an amazing result for the pair.  Jack then had two rides in 1.30m and came home with 2 clears for Vistogrand and Cuick Star Kervec. Friday was also the turn of Katie Speller on Be Skakkato, who also did a lovely clear round the 1m Open.  

CANAVAfter a flying visit to Hickstead, Shane headed off to Paris to compete at the GCT Paris 5* where the horses arrived safe and well taking in all the sights including the Eifel Tower! Kilabarron Rue jumped a great round in the  CSI5* 1.45  with an unfortunate pole, which was no reflection on her ability and temperament in the ring, which made for a great round to watch. 

 

On Saturday Jack and Z7 Mevano, an exciting horse for team Z7, did a lovely clear round the British Novice. Georgia then went on to do an effortless clear in the 1.30 with Donavaya to go into the jump off. Despite missing out on placings, the pair displayed amazing skill and agility on the turns making for an exciting round to watch. Katie Speller also had a successful day with Geniale Star Kervec. The two looked great as they did an amazing clear in the first round. This led them into the jump off where they had an unlucky pole but were great to watch and made it all look effortless. Meanwhile in Paris, Shabe and Z7 Ipswich jumped a beautiful clear in the CSI5* 1.55-1.60 and once again stood up to the plate and proved himself despite the atmospheric arena! We are always grateful for the opportunity to travel to the LGCTevents, and it is thanks our amazing grooms who ensure the horses are kept happy and stress free even when they are far from home. 

The final day of Hickstead was the highly anticipated, Al Shira’aa Jumping Championship. A nail-biting class which saw few succeed. But a 'lass the Breen Team came out on top! Jack Ryan had three horses entered, KBS Major Player and BBS Mcgregor, each had a pole in the first round which left them out of the jump off but they each put in strong performances. Jack’s third ride, Essenar High Hopes, really gave us ‘high hopes’ after a textbook clear in both the first round and the jump off leaving them in 3rd. Certainly a pair to watch for the future! Georgia then entered the ring on Z7 Ascot and gave us a brilliant display of riding in both rounds to come 5th overall.

Hickstead and LGCT Paris 

It was a busy week for Breen Equestrian as the whole team headed to the Queen’s back garden at Royal Windsor Horse Show.  

On the Thursday, the opening 1.40 saw the Breen Team dominate the top 10 placings. Georgia and her own Donavaya was just off the podium to finish in 4th place with Shane and new ride Lady Star van Doperheide in 5th. Jack followed closely behind with Cuick Star Kervec to finish in 7th. Jack also had another top 10 finish, but this time coming 6th in the Foxhunter with Koh I Noor. The highlight of the day was Katie and BE Constanta finishing 3rd in the Walwyn Novice - this class was for the best 6-year-olds who jumped the Foxhunter.  We are very proud of this special 6-year-old by Colmar, and great to see all of Katie’s hard work paying off! The final event of the day was the Puissance where Shane piloted the fantastic Can Ya Makan. They cleared a whopping 1.95m in the third round and finished in =3rd. A great result for their first Puissance together! 

On Friday Shane was in the CSI5* Speed Stakes with the fan favourite Z7 Ipswich. The pair had just one pole but jumped round with ease despite the huge course. Shane also had Gait L in the CSI5* Pearl Stakes where they had a great first round and just missed out on the jump off, but a super first day for both horses.  

Saturday was an easy day for the Team with Gait L in the CSI5* Kingdom of Bahrain Stakes and Kilabarron Rue in the Falcon Stakes. A few green mistakes for both horses put them out of placings but both put in great efforts and showed a super attitude in the ring - a super 5* debut for both of these promising horses. 

Sunday was an exciting day for the team, where Georgia with Evita XX and Jack with Essenar High Hopes were entered in the Under 25 Jumping Competition. They both had brilliant rounds in the first round and the jump off, with Jack finishing in 6th and Georgia in 12th. Shane and Gait L also had a good day in the CSI5* Manama Rose Show Stakes, where they had a speedy round with an unlucky pole putting them just out of a top 10 placing. For the final round of the day, Shane had Z7 Ipswich in the CSI5* Rolex Grand Prix. There was huge atmosphere and tricky course, but Z7 Ipswich proved cool and calm in the ring with an underserving pole but otherwise a brilliantly ridden round and it was exciting to see them back in the main at Windsor! 

A big thank you to the team at Windsor putting on just an amazing show. All of us at Breen Equestrian always look forward to the Royal Windsor Horse Show and this year did not disappoint!  

Royal Windsor Horse Show

This week Team Breen Equestrian returned to Hickstead for the Royal International horse show, while Jack flew to Vilamoura for the FEI Young Riders European Championships and Georgia set off to Warsaw for the EEF Nations Cup Final, it set out to be a busy week all round. 

It got off to a great start of Tuesday where Shane and Katie produced some great rounds in the age classes. Shane riding Koh-I-Noor in the 6 year olds rode a textbook clear finishing 11th, followed by another clear on Cato Boy in the 7 year olds who came 5th! Katie then followed with more super rounds on 5 year old BE Aquilla, who finished on 4 faults but still proved to have a great attitude throughout. BE Constanta was then clear in the 6 year olds, which was another great result for this pair. Shane and Cuick Star Kervec were then entered in the Winter Grades B&C Qualifier. They produced a clear in the first round sending them through to the jump off where despite 4 faults they placed 9th overall. Shane also rode Z7 Regal Don round the Winter Grades B&C Qualifier going clear in round one and just an unlucky 4 faults in the jump off. The highlight of the day in the Winter Grades B&C Qualifier went to Shane and Vistrogrand who not only went double clear but came out on top in 1st. A combination who never fail to deliver! 

Thursday was the first day of jumping for Georgia and Z7 Ascot in the EEF Nations Cup. This ever-consistent pairing came out with yet another clear after jumping a textbook round, falling just short of the time with 1 time penalty: still a very good start to the Nations Cup week.  

Back to Friday at Hickstead where Katie and BE Constanta were the winners of the Foxhunter. Over in Vilamoura, Jack and Team Ireland had a brilliant day. Despite the pressure of being a team rider, Jack and his partner in crime BBS Mcgregor were cool, calm and collected and produced some super rounds all week. As a result of all their hard work, Jack and his team represented Ireland strongly to take the team Silver Medal and Jack was placed 7th individually! It was a huge accomplishment for the team and it was great to see Jack apart of it and on the podium. 

After the excitement on Friday, Katie had a quick spin around the Senior Newcomers with BE Aquila on Saturday to go double clear and finish 13th. 

On Sunday, Georgia and the wonderful Z7 Ascot were the star of the show in Poland at the EEF Nations Cup Final. After what was causing problems for many riders, Georgia and Z7 Ascot jumped one of only 6 double clears, showcasing their class. These two are always proving time and again why they are ones to watch. They are consistently consistent and are such a pleasure to watch.  

As always, a huge thank you to the team at home for keeping the show going whilst we were away and our show grooms who ensure the horses are happy even when they are so far from home. A thank also goes to Team Ireland and Great Britain for allowing The Breen Team to represent their countries so well! 

The Royal International Horse Show, Young Rider European Championships and the EEF Nations Cup Final

The Breen Team returned to the continent this week for the 3* show in Saint Lo, France.  

Friday was a good day at the office for the team. In the 3* 1.35, Shane rode KBS Major Player for a clear schooling round with Jack copying the result with Guminka. Georgia stole the show in that class, coming 6th with the Old Lodge’s super mare, Quintella. In the 3* 1.45, Jack had a great result with his own Essenar High Hopes, jumping a foot perfect round with just a time fault keeping them out of the jump off.  

Saturday was Georgia’s day to shine, with her and Quintella adding yet another win to their resume in the 3* 1.40, winning the class by 0.38 seconds.  

On Sunday, Jack and Shane jumped clear rounds with Guminka and Z7 Regal Don, respectively. Jack and Guminka were fast enough to finish in 6th. The highlight of the show was Irish bred stallion Compelling Z finishing on the podium with a 3rd place in the 3* Grand Prix with Shane – it was fantastic to see this pairing back in the ring and back to doing what they do best.

3* St Lo 

The Breen Team split up again this week, with Shane and Ellen heading to Valence for the 5* Hubside jumping show and the rest of the Breen Team heading to the Al Shira’aa Young Horse Championships at Bolesworth.  

In Valence, Sjelle stepped up to the 5* level with a bang, jumping double clear in the 5* 1.40 to finish 9th. Lady Star van Doperheide also made her 5* debut, jumping double clear to finish 11th in the 5* 1.50. 8-year-old Vistogrand jumped some very educational rounds in the 2*, jumping clear in his first Ranking Class as well as impressing in his first 2* Grand Prix. The future definitely looks bright with these horses taking the step up a level all in their stride. 

Back in England, Jack, Georgia and Katie campaigned for the Breen Team at Bolesworth and did not disappoint. On Wednesday, both Jack and Katie had clean sheets in the 6-year-olds with Jack finishing in 9th on Koh-I-Noor and Katie and BE Constanta 17th. Katie then piloted BE Aquila to a clear in the 5-year-olds, showcasing this young stallion's potential and talent.  

On Thursday, new ride Operette van Koekoek jumped to third in the 7-year-old qualifier under Jack, showing so much promise for the future. Jack then secured another top 10 finish, this time riding Koh-I-Noor to 9th in the 6-year-olds.  

Jack and Operette van Koekoek kept their good form up on the Friday, slotting into 2nd in the 7-year-olds. The 6-year-olds also kept their sheets clean, with Koh-I-Noor and BE Constanta jumping clear rounds with Jack and Katie, respectively. However, it was Georgia who stole the spotlight, winning the 2* 1.30 by 0.7 seconds on her own Donavaya.  

The Breen Team finished the show on a high, with Jack winning the 7-year-old final on Operette van Koekoek in the main ring. An incredible way for this new partnership to finish their first show, always in the top 10 and never touching a pole.  

It was also fantastic to see Breen Equestrian bred horses jumping so well under new riders. BE Golden Lynx and BE Magic Cornet jumped stunning clear rounds in the 5-year-olds under Millie Allen, with BE Magic Cornet finishing in 4th and qualifying for the young horse championships in Lanaken. Millie also rode BE Reverent in the 2* 1.30 and 1.35 classes with some top 10 placings and we couldn’t be more pleased to see this horse fulfilling his potential.

Wins in Bolesworth and 5* Debuts in Valence

This week, Shane was at LGCT 5* Hamburg in Germany whilst Jack and Katie headed to Chepstow 2* in Wales - just another week of world domination for the Breen Team!  

In Hamburg, Shane rode Vistogrand to a stunning 4th place in the 8-year-old class on the first day with the young stallion showcasing his talent in the iconic grass ring. However, it was Z7 Ipswich who stole the show as he sped to 5th place in the 5* 1.55 on Saturday and won the 5* 1.50 class on the Sunday. Yet another win for Shane & Z7 Ipswich to add to their resume and further proving that Ipswich can win in any ring around the world!  

Back in England, Jack and Katie racked up the clear rounds. Both Koh-I-Noor and BE Constanta jumped foot perfect clear rounds in the 6-year-olds on the Friday, with Jack aboard Cuick Star Kervec slotting into 5th place in the 2* 1.40.   

On Saturday, Jack picked up 8th place with 6-year-old stallion Koh-I-Noor in the age classes, but it was Can Ya Makan who leapt to a place in the 2* 1.40. Stepping up the podium the next day, Can Ya Makan and Jack finished in 2nd in the 2* 1.40 Grand Prix, showing us all that Can Ya Makan has still got it! Katie also enjoyed success on the Sunday, taking 8th in the 2* Small Tour Grand Prix on Kilbarron Rue and posting another clear round with BE Constanta in the 6-year-olds.   

Monday was Jack’s day to shine, piloting Can Ya Makan to another 2nd place in the 2* 1.40 and also finishing in 2nd in the 2* Grand Prix on his own homebred BBS McGregor. What a way to end a great show!   

It was another fantastic show for Breen Equestrian bred horses as well, with BE Reverent impressing in the 2* 1.40 classes. But it was BE Golden (Golden Hawk x Zarnita) bringing home a hat trick that was the highlight of the show – finishing =1st the first day, winning the 6-year-old Accumulator and finally winning the 6-year-old final! What a horse with such a bright future that we can’t wait to continue to follow.

A 5* Win in Hamburg & Success at Chepstow  

This week was another busy week for the Breen Team as Georgia headed to her first Senior Europeans at Riesenbeck with Shane, who was jumping the 3* show. The rest of the Breen Team were competing at the inaugural Hickstead Tour.  

Jumping at the Senior European Championships is such a fantastic achievement for both Georgia and Z7 Ascot as they were given the chance to represent Team GB. Not only was this a Senior Championships debut for both of them, but Z7 Ascot’s 5* debut as well. Although not their show on paper, we couldn’t be prouder of how Z7 Ascot jumped and how Georgia represented not only the Breen Team and Team Z7, but her country at this level. The future is certainly bright for this young combination and we have no doubt that there is so much more to come from them at this level. 

Shane was competing at the 3* in Riesenbeck with his own team of horses as well as coaching Georgia through a tricky Championships. The horses were on good form as KBS Major Player cinched 3rd in the 3* 1.45 Ranking Class jumping an impressive round and Z7 Regal Don picked up a 7th place in the 3* 1.40.  

Back at Hickstead, the team was out in full force with Jack, Katie and new team member John flying the flag. Jack dominated on Wednesday, coming 5th in the 1.30 Open on Old Lodge’s Haya, 3rd in the 7-year-old's with Operette van Koekoek and 12th in the 6-year-olds on Koh-I-Noor. Rivell PS and Z7 Mevano campaigned well in the 4-year-olds with some stunning rounds, showing so much promise for the future.  

The week finished up with John piloting Haya to a speedy 3rd place in the 1.30 Final in the main ring in the hotly contested class. A fantastic finish to a fantastic week!

A 5* & Championship debuts and another fantastic show at Hickstead

This week, Shane and Ellen headed to Canteleu for the 3* show with Vistogrand, Cato Boy, Gait L & KBS Major Player.  

Thursday was a day full of clear rounds, with not one of the horses touching a pole. Cato Boy impressed in the 7-year-old class whilst the Kennedy brothers’ KBS Major Player showed his scope in the 3* 1.45. The  3* 1.40 saw 8-year-old stallion Vistogrand give everyone a masterclass in how to ride a classy round, but it was Gait L who landed in the prize money, taking home 8th.  

The horses kept their good form into Friday, with Gait L finishing just off the podium in 4th in the 3* 1.40, while Vistogrand jumped another great clear in the same class. Cato Boy gave his second stunning round in the 7-year-olds and KBS Major Player stepped up to the challenge in the 3* 1.50 Ranking Class to finish 5th in a blisteringly fast jump off.  

Vistogrand stole the show on Saturday, picking up 2nd in the 6-bar class to then go on and finish his show on a high with another clear round in the 3* 1.45 on the Sunday. In the 3* Grand Prix, KBS Major Player jumped an educational round showing just how much more is to come from this 10-year-old.  

Back on English soil, the rest of the Breen Team were kept busy with a successful show at Felbridge taking the young ones on Thursday. No rest for the wicked, the team were straight back out on the weekend with the young horses, competing at the NexGen Young Horse Final at Hickstead. John expertly piloted Z7 Mevano to 6th in the 4-year-olds as well as taking home 4th with Z7 Porsche in the 6-year-olds before repeating his success with Operette van Koekoek in the 7-year-olds. With horses like these coming up through the ranks, we can’t help but get excited about this next generation of horses. 

This week also saw success from BE bred horses under Millie Allen, who rode BE Magic Cornet to an impressive show in the FEI Young Horse World Breeding Championships. It’s amazing to see our homebred horses be recognised on the world stage and finding it all so easy! 

The Breen Team takes on Canteleu and NexGen 

The Breen Team headed up to Birmingham this week to compete in the famous Horse of the Year Show. 

Georgia set the tone for the show, winning the Welcome Stakes with Z7 Caretina – we can’t say enough how impressed we are with this little mare bouncing back from major surgery and already claiming multiple wins this year. In the Grandstand Stakes, Shane and Gait L claimed 5th place with Georgia and Z7 Ascot hot on their heels to finish in 6th. In the NAEC Stoneleigh Stakes, Shane piloted Lady Star van Doperheide to a stunning 7th place whilst Evita and Georgia jumped to 10th.  

On Saturday, 8-year-old Vistogrand stepped up to the challenge in the Accumulator to come home with a 2nd place – a very impressive result to add to this horse’s record! 

On Sunday, Vistogrand, out to do one better than his result the day before, cleared and impressive 1.75 in the 5 Fence Challenge to take the win! And in good company as well, as Shane and Vistogrand shared the win with the legend John Whitaker. In the Speed Horse of the Year, Georgia and Evita jumped to 10th place with Shane and Gait L following closely behind to finish in 11th. The show culminated in the 3* Grand Prix – the Leading Showjumper of the Year. Shane and Lady Star posted a beautiful round to come home with an 11th placing whilst Georgia and fan favourite Z7 Ascot jumped to 5th place, proving again just how consistent they are as a pair!

Horse of the Year Show

The Breen Team made their way to Portugal this week to kick off their tour in the sun. 

On Thursday, KBS Major Player jumped to 6th in the 4* 1.40 and Lady Star van Doperheide finished 10th in the 4* 1.50 with Shane. Georgia had a busy day, with the young horses jumping brilliantly in the 1* 1.20. Her own Donavaya slotted into 5th with Keyton hot on her heels to claim 6th place. Jack had a successful day with both BBS McGregor and Cuick Star Kervec posting clear rounds in the 4* 1.40 whilst 6-year-old Koh-I-Noor won the 1* 1.20.  

Friday saw more results. Shane schooled Lady Star around the 4* 1.35 to take 9th whilst Gait L took on the the 4* 1.50 to come 11th. Georgia piloted Haya around the 4* 1.40 for an 8th place whilst Cuick Star Kervec made his 1.50 Ranking Class debut with Jack for a stunning round. 

Saturday was a quieter day, but nonetheless, Shane and KBS Major Player took 11th in the 4* 1.50 whilst Jack and Koh-I-Noor finished 8th in the 1* 1.20. The highlight on Sunday was Gait L finishing on the podium in third place in the 4* 1.40 jump-off class – what a horse!

Vilamoura Week 1

Onto week 3 out in Vilamoura for the Breen Team, with Shane joining Jack and Georgia. 

Again, international competition kicked off with the young horses in the 6YOs. Day 1 saw Georgia place 11th on Keyton and Jack 9th on Koh-I-Noor. Then things ramped up a level on Wednesday with Jack taking the win on Tracey Forrest and Julia Morris’s Koh-I-Noor – a great result for this up-and-coming young horse. 

Thursday saw Shane and Kbs Major Player finish 7th in the CSI4* two phase 1.40m. Georgia and her family-owned Donavaya kicked off their weekly campaign with 9th place in the same class. Jack also picked up a 9th place position in the 1.45/1.50 on Breen Equestrian and Michael Quirke’s co-owned Cuick Star Kervec with Shane just behind him in 11th on Lady Star Van Dorperheide.  

Saturday’s results came from Evita, owned by Old Lodge, who cruised to 4th place in the 1.35 with Georgia. 

Then onto the final days jumping of the week for the team and some top results came in. Georgia and Donavaya kept their clean sheet of jumping for the week, with an impressive 3rd place in the 1.40 jump of class. Jack and his mother’s Bbs McGregor put in a brilliant performance in the Grand Prix, only to heartbreakingly have the very last fence down in the jump off to keep them off top spot. However, they still finished 4th with their two strong rounds of jumping. 

Now onto the closing week of this year’s 2021 Vilamoura Champions Tour and the team are looking forward to a busy week making it count.
