Global Champions Tour - Doha

March 09, 18:12

The first leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour took place in Doha last week, Shane selecting horses Z7 Ipswich and Compelling Z as his mounts for the season kick off.

The horses travelled well, accompanied by Ellen and had plenty of time to adjust to weather conditions as well as the atmosphere of the Al Shaqab Arena.

Both put in solid performances in the individual classes, with Ipswich notching up a lovely clear in the 5* 1.45 and Compelling taking 5th place in the 5* 1.50 Speed.

But it was the Global Champions League competition that allowed both horses to shine with Shane making his debut with his 2020 team, the New York Empire. He brought Compelling home in 4th place in the 1.55 speed and after selected Empire team-mate Denis Lynch had an unlucky 4 faults in that first round, Shane capitalised on Ipswich’s form – riding a perfect clear for 8th place in round 2. Unfortunately, an uncharacteristic 4 from Scott Brash saw the team finish on 8, but in a healthy 7th place as they head towards the next league show in Mexico City at the end of the month.
